St. Rose of Lima School was filled with festive spirit during its first annual Christmas Around the World Food Fair. Families, students, and staff gathered to share dishes that told stories, celebrated traditions, and filled the school with music, laughter, and the aromas of food from around the world. It was more than an event. It was a celebration of culture, connection, and community pride.
Sharing Culture Through Food
The gathering was both a food fair and a celebration of belonging. Families prepared and presented recipes that highlighted their cultural heritage, from cherished family meals to treats enjoyed during special holidays. Many students and parents wore traditional clothing, proudly sharing the stories behind their dishes.
Living Our Spiritual Theme
The evening reflected the school’s motto, St. Rose Strong: We All Belong, and the OCSB Spiritual Theme, Open Doors, Build Bridges, Nourish New Beginnings. It gave families an opportunity to connect, learn from one another, and celebrate the diversity that shapes the St. Rose community. Conversations flowed about traditions, ingredients, and the many ways people around the world celebrate Christmas.
The event’s influence continued beyond the evening. Since the fair, students and families have shown greater interest in sharing other cultural celebrations such as Diwali and Navaratri. Parents also expressed enthusiasm for future events, recognizing that food and storytelling strengthen community ties.
Community Support and Leadership
Trustee Jeremy Wittet joined families for the celebration, greeting parents, sampling dishes from many cultures, and hearing the stories behind the recipes. His encouragement to host the event again was warmly received and reflected the Board’s ongoing commitment to inclusion and belonging.
Special thanks are extended to Ashley Grant (Kindergarten and Resource Teacher) and Sarah Miltio (Grade 1 Teacher) for their leadership and creativity in organizing the event. Appreciation also goes to Superintendent Ben Vallati for his support and to custodial staff Mike and Richard, whose work helped make the evening a success.
The Christmas Around the World Food Fair was more than an evening of food and celebration. It was a reminder that at St. Rose of Lima, every family has a place at the table and every story is valued.
