At Guardian Angels School, Kindergarten was a journey of exploration, creativity, and hands-on learning. Students embraced exciting projects that fuelled their curiosity and taught valuable lessons in science, teamwork, and environmental stewardship.
Building a Garden Bed: Planting Seeds for the Future
One of the most inspiring projects of the year was the creation of a garden bed. What began as a conversation about healthy eating and where food comes from soon grew into a plan to build a vegetable garden of their own.
The students started by visiting the Principal to find the perfect location for their garden. Once they received permission, they worked together to collect leftover lumber from a local hardware store. With the help of a generous parent volunteer, the students assembled the garden bed piece by piece.
Building the garden bed became a multi-step learning adventure. Students laid a liner at the bottom, then filled the bed with logs, branches, leaves, compost, and soil. With great excitement, they planted garlic bulbs in each corner and tucked them in with a cozy “hay blanket” for the winter.
To mark their new creation, students designed garden signs that reminded others to be respectful of the growing space. This simple activity also allowed them to practise their letter-sound relationships and early writing skills.
The students looked forward to spring, when they would explore companion planting and grow their own vegetables. This project taught them about foo
The Bird Feeder Project: A Helping Hand for Our Feathered Friends
Another memorable learning experience was the Bird Feeder Project. It began with a thoughtful question from one of the students: Which birds migrate, and which stay behind during the winter?
That question led to lessons about local bird species, including blue jays, cardinals, goldfinches, and chickadees. The students decided to help their feathered friends through the cold months by designing and building bird feeders.
Before construction began, the students tested wood, metal, cardboard, and plastic in the snow to see which would work best. After observing and comparing the results, they built their feeders using plastic and treated cartons.
Next came the challenge of finding the safest and most suitable locations. Students surveyed the playground and chose sturdy branches high enough to protect the feeders from predators. Each feeder included a small perch and a window so the birds could eat comfortably.
Finally, the feeders were filled with birdseed blends that did not contain nuts, ensuring easy digestion for their new visitors. The project became an excellent lesson in teamwork, compassion, and care for creation.
Looking Ahead
The Guardian Angels School’s Kindergarten program nurtured curious, capable, and caring young learners. Students developed essential life skills and an appreciation for the natural world through projects such as the garden bed and bird feeders.
As the school year continued, the possibilities for discoveries felt endless. What remained constant was the students’ enthusiasm, collaboration, and determination to make the world around them a little brighter.
At Guardian Angels School, the Kindergarten team and families were proud to see these young learners grow into thoughtful, confident, and compassionate community members.
