Learning Through Play and Exploration
In every Kindergarten classroom across the Ottawa Catholic School Board, curiosity, creativity, and discovery were at the heart of learning. From counting and sorting to building and problem-solving, the youngest learners developed essential math skills through play, often without even realizing it. At St. John the Apostle School, students explored mathematics in joyful, hands-on ways using tools such as K’Nex.
At the heart of the OCSB Kindergarten program was the belief that children learned best through play-based exploration. Play encouraged intellectual growth, social development, physical coordination, and emotional resilience. Across all OCSB elementary schools, the bilingual Kindergarten program provided learning opportunities in both English and French, helping students build communication skills, confidence, and cognitive flexibility from an early age.
Building Math Skills with K’Nex
One of the creative ways St. John the Apostle students strengthened their math skills was by building with K’Nex, a colourful, hands-on construction tool that encouraged imagination and problem-solving. As students connected pieces to bring their ideas to life, they explored key mathematical concepts such as counting, symmetry, shape, and measurement.
When they counted the number of pieces they used, compared sizes, or experimented with balance and proportion, they built mathematical understanding through play. The experience transformed abstract concepts into something tangible, fun, and meaningful.
Teamwork and Self-Regulation
Collaborating on K’Nex projects also helped children develop teamwork and self-regulation skills. Students shared materials, exchanged ideas, and cooperated to build together, learning to listen, take turns, and celebrate each other’s creativity. At the same time, the Kindergarten program nurtured self-awareness, patience, and focus, helping children manage their emotions and stay engaged in their learning.
A Strong Foundation for Lifelong Learning
Through playful, hands-on learning experiences, St. John the Apostle’s Kindergarten students developed the skills and confidence they would carry throughout their education. Whether exploring early math concepts, communicating in two languages, or building friendships and resilience, OCSB’s Kindergarten program provided a strong foundation for lifelong learning and success.
