Creativity That Opened Doors
At St. Michael Elementary School, young storytellers created magic through photos, videos, and podcasts. Panther Minds Media, a dynamic student-led club, turned everyday school moments into lasting memories. Under the creative guidance of Educational Assistant Wilson Kalu, a recipient of the Director of Education Commendation Award, students stepped behind the camera, mastered media tools, and used their voices to inspire, inform, and connect their community.
Panther Minds Media was about more than learning to use a camera or microphone. It gave students a voice, a sense of pride, and a creative outlet that brought their school community together.
I wanted the kids to create memories they can hold onto, said Kalu. I wanted them to be proud of what they’ve done throughout the school year.
Where Arts and Technology Met
Panther Minds Media was a living example of how the arts and technology came together to inspire critical thinking, innovation, and joy in learning. At the Ottawa Catholic School Board, the arts were an essential part of education, helping students think deeply, reflect meaningfully, and express themselves creatively.
Whether students created an Instagram Reel, produced a podcast, or filmed a highlight video, they engaged in the same process of interpretation, reflection, and expression found in music, dance, drama, and visual arts. These experiences built confidence, nurtured a sense of accomplishment, and developed essential skills that extended far beyond the classroom.
Empowering Students Through Expression
Since its launch in September 2024, Panther Minds Media became a hub of creativity and connection. Students produced sports highlight videos, school event recaps, heartfelt holiday features, and public service announcements.
One standout project captured the excitement of the Ultimate Frisbee team’s season, while another — the school’s Black History Month video — earned second place in a Board-wide competition.
These projects did more than showcase events. They gave students opportunities to express themselves, take initiative, and collaborate toward shared goals.
We’ve seen students come up with their own ideas for new videos or ask to cover class events, said Kalu. Some have even started learning to edit videos, with dreams of launching their own YouTube channels.
Creating Valuable Skills for Life
Through Panther Minds Media, students gained real-world experience using cameras, microphones, and tripods while developing teamwork, storytelling, and leadership skills. The club encouraged collaboration, strengthened friendships, and gave students opportunities to serve as positive role models within the school.
For many, it became a source of confidence, creativity, and belonging — qualities that would carry them well into the future.
Connecting Community, One Frame at a Time
In its first year, Panther Minds Media quickly became an integral part of life at St. Michael Elementary School. From Culture Day celebrations to school barbecues, the club captured and celebrated the heart of the community. Photos and videos were shared throughout the school, helping students and families see themselves as part of something special.
With the passion of its leader and the enthusiasm of its young creators, Panther Minds Media grew into more than a club. It became a creative movement — a space where students could explore, connect, and shine, one frame at a time.
