Learning Beyond the Classroom

At St. Matthew High School, learning extended beyond the classroom and into the community. Through the Co-op Carousel Experience, students stepped outside textbooks and into real workplaces, gaining hands-on experience that connected their studies to future careers.

This dynamic program was about more than earning credits. It was about building confidence, mastering practical skills, and discovering passions that could shape a student’s path after graduation. Whether students explored trades, healthcare, business, or technology, Co-op provided a head start toward meaningful and rewarding careers.

Co-op Carousel: Showcasing Student Achievements

St. Matthew High School hosted its annual Co-op Carousel, a celebration of the hard work and accomplishments of students enrolled in the Co-op program. For the past two years, this event gave students a platform to showcase their work placements and share experiences with peers interested in joining the program.

Students presented their learning in creative ways, using displays, pamphlets, and interactive demonstrations that reflected their individual placements. The event encouraged conversation and curiosity, giving attendees the chance to ask questions and learn what Co-op was really like.

To add to the excitement, one lucky participant won a gift card to a local business. Organizers planned to expand the event in the future by inviting workplace supervisors to share their insights, further strengthening the connection between education and industry.

Why Co-op Was a Game Changer for Students

The Co-op program offered students a bridge between education and employment. By working in placements directly related to their studies, students gained hands-on experience while developing transferable skills that prepared them for success in post-secondary education and the workforce.

What made Co-op such a valuable opportunity:

  • Real-world application: Students saw how classroom learning connected to workplace skills, giving meaning and context to their studies.
  • Career clarity: Co-op helped students explore career options, identify interests, and make informed choices about their futures.
  • Self-confidence and growth: Working in professional environments built independence, communication skills, and resilience.
  • Mentorship and networking: Students developed valuable relationships with mentors and potential employers while gaining professional references.
  • Pathway to post-secondary: Co-op helped students understand what education or training was needed for their chosen careers and prepared them for the transition.

Looking Ahead: Building a Strong Future

At St. Matthew High School, the Co-op program was more than a requirement; it was a launchpad. Students did more than learn about careers — they experienced them firsthand, gaining the confidence and knowledge to take their next steps.

The Co-op Carousel was one of many ways the school celebrated student success and promoted experiential learning. Each year, the event continued to grow, reflecting the program’s impact in helping students build connections, develop skills, and prepare for life beyond high school.
