Something powerful unfolded when students, families, staff, and community partners came together to honour Black excellence in all its forms: academic success, personal growth, cultural pride, and community connection.
For the first time, the Black Excellence Graduation Celebration united Black graduates from across the city for a joyful evening that recognized not only their achievements but also the journeys that shaped them. The celebration was held on a day of deep meaning and symbolism, one that represented Black freedom, resilience, and joy.
The event took place at Tropikal Ottawa, a Black-owned restaurant with strong roots in the community and a long-standing commitment to supporting student programs. More than just a venue, Tropikal became a space of belonging. Chef Jimmy D, the restaurant’s Executive Chef, generously volunteered his time and talent, preparing a heartfelt meal that filled the room with both warmth and gratitude.
Celebrating More Than Graduation
This was not just a ceremony. It was a celebration of community, culture, and identity. Black graduates from across the Ottawa Catholic School Board (OCSB) were joined by their families, mentors, and supporters, alongside representatives from grassroots organizations including the Ottawa Sooners, The V2V Project, the Somali Centre for Family Services, and CFL player Kene Onyeka. Their presence reminded everyone that success was never achieved alone. It was nurtured by a powerful network of community care and collective pride.
The celebration also featured student and alumni contributions. Sheku, a graduating student and artist, performed live for his peers, while former Graduation Coach David Kajoba delivered an inspiring keynote address that left the room energized and united.
Two exceptional students were honoured for their leadership and perseverance:
- Olantu Nini – Community Leadership Award.
- Daniel Lombo – Challenge and Endeavour Award.
The Role of Graduation Coaches
At the heart of this celebration, and throughout the year, were the relationships and experiences fostered by the Black Graduation Coach Program.
This initiative focused on mentorship, advocacy, and culturally responsive programming to support Black students in every aspect of their high school journey. Highlights included:
- One-on-one mentorship supporting academics, personal growth, and post-secondary planning.
- Career exploration events connecting students with Black professionals in trades, technology, law enforcement, and the arts.
- Experiential learning opportunities such as visits to community landmarks, sports events, and STEM conferences for Black youth.
- Leadership workshops, including ELEVATE, focused on empowerment, public speaking, and civic engagement.
- Community service projects that helped students complete volunteer hours while building pride and purpose.
- Participation in national celebrations such as the Black Legacy Gala, honouring Black excellence and achievement across Canada.
Each initiative shared one goal: to create safe, empowering spaces where Black students felt seen, valued, and inspired to thrive.
Shaping the Future
